Grandson
A poem for a story
This is a conversation between an old man and his grandson as the old man is passing away. It was inspired by Sandy Wilder.
Dear grandson,
I’m afraid I’m coming to the end of my journey
A shame, because the world hasn’t heard me
Well, except you.
This body is old, but my soul is ancient
The next life will come if I am patient
But right now, I’m with you
My dear grandson,
You are such a grand grandson
Your soul is old, too, though you look young
But you are wise
Yes, I see that in your deep eyes.
.
Oh grandfather
All we have is each other
Please don’t go!
I’ll bring you little crystals from the chandelier
If you just stay longer here
I’ll tell you stories
Of treasures and glories
Just don’t go… don’t go
.
Grandson,
I know you know better
Though life isn’t spelled out in letter
You know
I will be with you always
Right up til the end of your days
Then we’ll meet again
After you’re ten and ten and ten
.
But grandfather,
That’s a long time to wait
A long time to bear the weight
Of loss
.
My grandson,
It’s not loss, I swear
It’s a daydream, not a nightmare
Just sweet
Then we’ll meet
Then we’ll open our eyes
And see skies
But first this body dies
I’ll see you soon, my boy
So please, just enjoy
As a favor to me.
.
Oh, grandfather
Wait! Just a minute more
Before you drift from the shore
Tell me how I will find you, someday
.
Dear, dear grandson
You will feel it deep down
You will KNOW I am around
Love like that shakes the ground
You will know.
.
I will know
.
It’s time.
I must go.
But, my grandson, you must know
That whatever seeds you sew
Will blossom and see you through
And, grandson?
Plant a seed for me, too.

I only have one part to explain, because I feel that the rest explains itself.
Line 3. ‘The world hasn’t heard me’ to me means that no one has really understood all that the grandfather had to give. That is, except for the grandson, who is the old man’s only companion.
I feel that the theme of this story is that the two souls will be together always. The man is trying to convince the boy of this.
